After the Lidice tragedy, the
Stoke-on-Trent councilor, Sir Barnett Stross, was able to find the help of
local coal miners in order to rebuild Lidice. He also worked with the miners to
launch the ´Lidice Shall Live´ campaign, which was made to raise funds for
survivors to rebuild their destroyed village. The total amount that the city of
Stroke-on-Trent raised £32,000 (the equivalent of £1 million in today’s terms)
to help restore Lidice.
This massacre also inspired a
documentary ‘Lidice: A light across the sea’, funded by the Heritage Lottery
Fund, which mainly looks at the historical events that occurred during WW II
and shows engaging accounts from many survivors from the Lidice tragedy and Sir
Barnett Stross´ family members.
